Graduate Student Seminar with John Flavin and Saeed Mirshekari on Working in Industry after Grad School
A double talk from WashU alumni on going into industry after grad school.
Saeed Mirshekari: I am a Physicist by training and a Data Scientist by trade. I was born and grew up in Tehran, Iran (1983-2008). I lived in St. Louis MO (2009-2012), Gainesville FL (2012), Milwaukee WI (2013) in the United States, in Paris, France (2012) and in São Paulo, Brazil (2013-2015). I made a transition from academia to industry in 2015. I currently live in O'Fallon and work for MasterCard company as a Director Data Scientist. In the past I worked for U-Tehran, WUSTL, UF, LIGO, ICTP-SAIFR, ACLARA, and Monsanto/Bayer in various roles.
John Flavin: I earned my PhD from WashU in 2012, working under Alex Seidel on the 1D “coherent state” representation of anyons in 2D fractional quantum Hall states. Which is to say condensed matter theory. Before that I got bachelors degrees in physics and math from Mizzou in 2007. Since graduating I have worked at a startup and a research group at the WashU Med School. I am currently a data engineer at the Climate Corporation, which is a subsidiary of Bayer.
