Physics Graduate Student Seminar with Minju Sim on Introduction to Spider Pulsar Binaries (and Me)

Minju Sim of Washington University in St. Louis will be presenting the seminar "Introduction to Spider Pulsar Binaries (and Me)"

In the binary system of a massive super-giant star and a sun-like star, after a supernova explosion,  the massive star remains as a radio pulsar and gradually cools down. As a lower-mass star evolves, the materials from the star are flowed to the pulsar by an accretion disk. Consequently, the pulsar gets an angular momentum and emerges as a millisecond radio pulsar. This is the so-called recycling process. After that, the millisecond pulsars evaporate their companion. Because of this process, they are dubbed Black Widow and Redback, which devour their partner after mating. In this talk, I will introduce these intriguing pulsar binary systems and explore radiation mechanisms coming from them through orbital light curves. These include well-studied optical and X-ray bands, as well as gamma-ray bands, which are under active investigation. Also, I hope you enjoy getting to know me better through this presentation :)
