IMSE Seminar with Jingjing Li on Materials Structures

Jingjing Li, Associate Professor, Industrial and Manufacturing Engineering, Pennsylvania State University will be presenting the seminar "Creation of Dissimilar Materials Structures"

Increasing environmental concerns and demands for high-performance products drive the needs for manufacturing dissimilar materials structures with tailored properties. However, fabricating these structures by conventional fusion welding is challenging. The generation of brittle phases (i.e., intermetallic compounds) is a significant concern and could negatively impact weld integrity, strength, and reliability. This talk will review Dr. Li’s recent work on creating dissimilar materials structures through additive manufacturing and different welding methods. In particular, she will focus on interfacial bonding mechanisms, defect generation, and the development of process-structure-property relations.  She will also introduce new material characterization techniques developed by her group.

Jingjing Li is an Associate Professor of Industrial and Manufacturing Engineering at the Pennsylvania State University, University Park.  She received Bachelor’s degree from Beihang University, China, in 2002, and Master’s degree from Tsinghua University, China, in 2005, both in Materials Science and Engineering.  She earned her Master’s degree in Statistics in 2010 and Ph.D. in Mechanical Engineering in 2011, from the University of Michigan, Ann Arbor.  Her primary research interest focuses on materials processing and characterization, particularly on in-situ material characterization, mechanical behavior, failure analysis, and the effect of microstructure on macroscopic properties with applications in sheet metal forming, joining of dissimilar materials, additive manufacturing, and composite manufacturing.  She is the vice-chair for the ASME Manufacturing Processes Technical Committee, an associate editor of Journal of Manufacturing Science and Engineering, Manufacturing Letters, and Journal of Manufacturing Processes, and a recipient of the ASME Chao and Trigger Young Manufacturing Engineer Award, NSF CAREER Award, and several best paper awards.
