Finding Correlation in Topological Quantum Materials

Dr. Joe Checkelsky (host Ogilvie), MIT

The field of condensed matter physics has seen a revolution with the integration of the concept of topology to electronic band theory.  While the majority materials realizations of non-trivial electronic topology have been in systems with small electronic correlation, it is expected that a rich variety of topological states should also appear in correlated systems.  We here describe our recent experiments exploring the integration of magnetism in to this material phase space.  We focus in particular on the use of symmetries as a guide to choosing candidate systems as well as recent efforts with computational tools to augment this search.
