Energy Storage - How Does it Work and How Can We Make it Better?

Anders Carlsson, Professor of Physics, Washington University in St. Louis

Renewable energy sources are a growing fraction of our energy budget, but they are strongly intermittent. The ability to store energy for future is thus essential for the penetration of renewable energy sources into the energy grid.  The talk will explain the "how-to" of some key energy-storage technologies, describe current limits on the technologies, and point to promising directions for the future, including underground thermal energy storage.
