Event Description

Fast Radio Bursts were completely unexpected and the most mysterious astronomical discovery of recent years. The presence of intervening plasma implies cosmological distances with redshifts from 0.2 to ~ 1. They have millisecond durations and brightness temperatures as high as 1037K. Like pulsars (and your local radio station) their emission must be coherent. Short durations and high power point to an origin around neutron stars, but they are otherwise mysterious. I will summarize the data and the various hypotheses for their origin but won't offer any resolution of these mysteries.
