The Physics of Bicycles

Kater Murch, Associate Professor of Physics, Washington University in St. Louis

Many of us might remember our first time riding a bicycle or at least watching a child on that thrilling first day - after the bumps and scratches of a few crashes - stability is achieved and we’re flying! What holds us up while riding a bicycle? Physics of course! In this tour of bicycle physics, we’ll discuss the mechanics of balance, the aerodynamics of drag, and even the physiology of the fastest and most efficient human-powered form of transportation.
