Washington University lies in the heart of the St. Louis metropolitan area which has a population of more than 2.5 million residents. Nearby Forest Park is home to the St. Louis Art Museum, the St. Louis Science Center, the outdoor Municipal Opera, the Missouri Historical Society Museum, the St. Louis Zoo, the Steinberg Skating Rink, nature study paths, picnic grounds, and the John F. Kennedy Memorial Forest. In the midtown area about 4 miles from the campus are the Missouri Botanical Gardens with its famous Climatron and Japanese Garden, and Powell Symphony Hall, where the St. Louis Symphony Orchestra perform about 60 concerts a year. Eight miles from the campus are Busch Stadium the home of the St. Louis Cardinal baseball team, the Edward Jones Dome, where the St. Louis Rams football team plays, the Scottrade Center, where the ice hockey St. Louis Blues compete and frequent concerts are held, and the National Expansion Memorial, where the 630 foot Gateway Arch stands. Excursion boats and floating restaurants are moored on the Mississippi riverfront, and clubs offer live music nightly. Two miles west of the campus is the city of Clayton, the seat of the St. Louis County Government Center and home offices of a number of corporations of national stature. The Missouri countryside and the Ozarks offer a rich variety of outdoor recreational opportunity such as floating and fishing in the streams of the Ozark National Riverways as well as hiking and camping in the surrounding national forests. |
