Throughout his career Prof. Solin's research focus has been on fundamental physical phenomena in ordered and disordered solids. His current interests and research activities include X-ray physics, high-pressure physics, mesoscopic/nanoscopic physics, phase transformations, metal-insulator transitions, 2D and 3D magnetism, order-disorder phenomena, semiconductor superlattices, hot carrier effects, layered intercalation compounds, finite crystal size effects, electron energy loss spectroscopy, field-emission analytical electron microscopy, time resolved femtosecond luminescense and Raman scattering spectroscopy, linear and nonlinear magnetotransport and Extraordinary Magnetoresistance (EMR) in mesoscopic and macroscopic systems.

Prof. Stuart A. Solin received his BS degree in Physics from MIT in 1963. He received his MS and Ph.D degrees, also in Physics, from Purdue University in 1965 and 1969, respectively.

After receiving his Ph.D. he joined the Physics faculty of the University of Chicago where he became Co-director of the NSF Materials Research Laboratory. In 1979 he moved to Michigan State University and shortly thereafter organized and directed the Center For Fundamental Materials Research. In 1989 Prof. Solin joined the NEC Research Institute in Princeton, NJ as a Fellow and while there twice served as chairperson of the Board of Fellows, the governing body of the Institute. In 2002 Prof. Solin moved to Washington University to take the Charles M. Hohenberg Chair of Experimental Physics.

Prof. Solin is a Fellow of the American Physical Society, a Fellow and Chartered Physicist of the Institute of Physics, UK and was a Sloan Fellow. He became a Distinguished Professor at MSU in 1988 and received the Distinguished Alumnus Award from Purdue University in 1997. Prof. Solin received the Best Patent Award for 1998 and the Technology Impact Award for 2000 from NEC. Prof. Solin has published over 230 scientific articles, has been awarded 15 patents, has edited or co-edited several books and has authored many scholarly review articles. He is also a Principal Editor of the Journal of Materials Research and a Member, U.S. Editorial Advisory Board, Journal of Physics: Condensed Matter.
